Quickening Period
( ~ 1949.9)

'Independence Movement' in Korea and aboard under the Japanese colonial rule during the 1910~1920s is considered as the starting point of the Republic of Korea Air Force. Most of all, the attempt Ahn Chang-ho to purchase airplanes during the provisional Shanghai government and the foundation of Korean flight school(Willows) in California were actual things for 'aviation freedom'. And the pilot training was entrusted the Korean established flying school and Chinese/Soviet flight schools with. Some of Korean pilots in the 1920s were appointed as current pilot officers, some played active parts in the Chinese Air unit.

In the 1930s, Korean pilots kept going on the anti-Japanese independence movement joining the Sino-Japanese War.

Between 1944 and 1945, the government-in-exile based in Shanghai endeavored to make up for 'Air Force Design Committee' and 'Korean Independence Wing'. Furthermore, the joint operation with the U.S. 'Entry Operation of Korea' was vanished by Japanese surrender. On the 18th August, 1945, the unsatisfied Independence Army with the advance corps flew from Xian in China to Yeoido airport in Korea using C-47 aircraft. That came close to confronting Japanese remnants.

Working aboard airmen returned home and formed civilian aircraft groups actively spreading airmanship after 1945 liberation. However, as it was too hard to make use of the private institutions, they founded 'Korean Aeronautic and Construction Association' and recommended the establishment of air unit to the U.S. military rule and the direct command of Tongwibu, the former body of the Ministry of National Defense. Therefore, on March, 1948 'Light Flight Unit' was approved, the first Air Unit was established on the 5th May, 1948 under the Tongwibu. That could help make the basis for the foundation of an independent air force. R.O.K. firstly acquired ten L-4 Grasshoppers from the U.S. on September, 1948.

When Act on the Organization of National Armed Forces was legislated on November, 1948, Army and Navy except Air Force regularly were established nothing but the grounds of Air Force independence(Act on the Organization of National Armed Forces no. 23). After stressing the need of the Air Force establishment in accordance with continuous aviation industry, Republic of Korea Air Force as an independent service came to give birth by Presidential decree no. 254(air force headquarters organization) on the first October, 1949.
